ON THE COVER: The peak of Gamla where a Jewish town in 67 A.D. defended itself against the Romans who were led by the Emperor-to-be, Vespasian. Despite the valor of the Jews and the heavy initial losses they inflicted on the Romans, the Romans ultimately prevailed. Many Jewish families threw themselves over Gamla’s precipices rather than submit to the Romans.
