Muscular lions and winged sphinxes in high relief embellish the sides of this 12th-century B.C. ivory box from Megiddo. Carved from a single piece of ivory, this box probably once contained something very precious. Perhaps the artist created these lifelike animals to challenge any would-be intruders.
