Pottery—a signal of different cultures. Distinctive and elegant Philistine potsherds from Ashdod, on the Mediterranean coast south of Tel Aviv, exhibit characteristic geometric designs and stylized figures, such as the bird at center. These motifs, all painted in red and black on a white slip background, reflect the artistic influence of late Mycenaean painted pottery.
