A neckless conical jar from Philistine-era (12th-century B.C.E.) Tel Dor. Lacking a neck but having very strong shoulders and thick walls (the inner dimensions were only a third of the outer dimensions), jars such as this were ideally suited to withstand the stresses of sea trade and were as a result a favorite transport vessel of the Sea Peoples. The neckless conical jar was modified over the centuries, becoming in the eighth century B.C.E. the standard Phoenician vessel for liquids, pickled fish and other produce.
