HISTORY IN RUINS. Located in al-Qosh, some 30 miles northeast of Mosul, Iraq, this synagogue is believed to house the tomb of the Biblical prophet Nahum. The shrine used to be a pilgrimage site, but with nobody left to maintain the structure, it is slowly being reduced to rubble. The synagogue’s location in a disputed area of a war-torn region offered little hope for its survival—until 2017, when first steps were made to stop further deterioration.
