REHOV INSCRIPTION. Gracing the floor of a Late Antique synagogue in Rehov, Israel, a mosaic cites a passage from the Jerusalem Talmud that lists vegetables, pulses, fruits, and other plants. The inscription records which plants were forbidden or permitted during the sabbatical year (when the land was to rest and not be worked). Not only does this provide insight into the diet in Late Antique Palestine, but it is also the earliest Talmudic text found to date.
