The photo shows pilgrims gathering on both banks of the Jordan River to mark the baptism; those standing on the left are in Israel, those on the right are in Jordan. Until the 1994 peace treaty between the two countries, the Jordanian side was hemmed in with land mines, making it off limits to archaeologists and pilgrims alike.
