PILGRIMAGE ROAD. Many pilgrims approached Jerusalem from the south, passing through the city’s southeastern gate near the Pool of Siloam just inside the city. From there, they ascended to the Temple Mount along a paved pedestrian thoroughfare that ran along the Tyropoeon Valley. Underground excavations in the City of David have revealed nearly the entire length of this paved road, along with shop stalls, water installations, and other features that were needed to accommodate the flow of pilgrims.
