AT THE TEMPLE GATES. During much of the Second Temple period, the main entrance to the Temple was from the south. From the area of the Ophel, where pilgrims gathered at the foot of the Temple Mount, two sets of wide steps led to two gates (together known as the Huldah Gates) that gave access to the Temple complex. Both the Double Gate and Triple Gate were sealed in later periods, but the outlines of both are still visible in the southern wall of the ancient Temple Mount. This photo shows the broad staircase (now restored) leading to the Double Gate (hidden from view), while the Triple Gate (with three openings) is visible about halfway along the wall.
