WATERWORKS. A system of subterranean tunnels in Area D1 connects to the monumental building and the large stepped pool. Although some parts of the system clearly predate both structures, other parts, such as this arch in the foundations of a Herodian wall above, were built simultaneously with the monumental building. Together with pools, cisterns, streets, and staircases, these tunnels were part of the purpose-built infrastructure that supported Jerusalem pilgrimage in the last decades of the Second Temple period.
