PUBLIC ARCHAEOLOGY. The Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center in Israel is a fine example of robust investment in preserving and presenting archaeological discoveries for the enjoyment of both local communities and foreign visitors. The sensational mosaic floor at Lod, dated to around 300 CE, has been enclosed in a large pavilion to protect it from the elements; walkways and galleries follow the perimeter of the floor, permitting freedom of movement so that observers can gain excellent visual access to this remarkable ancient artwork. The center also hosts educational workshops that allow school and community groups to engage in hands-on learning activities about the mosaic arts.
