CERRO DEL VILLAR ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT / COURTESY OF MARÍA EUGENIA AUBET

FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. Cerro del Villar was a major pottery production center that maintained strong connections with Phoenician styles and traditions. Kilns at the site are virtually identical to those discovered at Phoenician sites in the Levant. The mercantile character of the community led to the import of goods from trading partners spanning the Mediterranean. The decorated sherd shown here, which bears a fragmentary Greek inscription, is a testament to the site’s cosmopolitan tastes and its access to luxury goods from far-flung places.
