SANCTUARY OF THE STANDARDS. The imposing basilica on the Via Principalis hosted the camp’s central sanctuary (sacellum). This sacred space, which held the legion’s standards (signa), served for administrative ceremonies and religious rituals related to the imperial cult and traditional Roman deities. The precisely laid stone pavement reflects the sanctuary’s splendor, which is further attested through fragments of altars and decorated architectural elements, including this carved limestone block. Inscribed with Leg(io) VI Ferr(ata), or “the Sixth Ironclad Legion,” it would have held one of the camp’s ceremonial standards.
