TRAINING GROUNDS. The Roman amphitheater to the northwest of the camp did not put on classic Greek plays or host local entertainers. Rather, it was used for military drills and combat training. Constructed in a natural depression, the amphitheater featured curved limestone walls and a vaulted entrance with multiple corridors. After later expansion, it could seat up to 5,000 people. Numerous finds of oil lamps may reflect rituals in honor of Nemesis, the Roman goddess of vengeance.
