SANCTUARY OF THE STANDARDS. The imposing basilica on the Via Principalis hosted the camp’s central sanctuary (sacellum). This sacred space, which held the legion’s standards (signa), served for administrative ceremonies and religious rituals related to the imperial cult and traditional Roman deities. The precisely laid stone pavement in the photo above reflects the sanctuary’s splendor, which is further attested through fragments of altars and decorated architectural elements.
