THE FUNERARY MONUMENT known as the Tomb of Zechariah (right) is carved from the bedrock as a cube-shaped structure with Ionic half-columns and decorative panels, topped by a pyramid. Through a passage in the cliff’s wall (not visible here), it connects to the Tomb of Benei Hezir (left), for which it likely served as a nefesh. Identified by an inscription above the entrance, this funerary monument belonged to one of the priestly courses that the Bible says was appointed by King David. It features a columned portico and burial chambers accessed through corridors cut into the cliff behind it.
