HOLY OF HOLIES. The temple’s central and largest room featured a tall standing stone (massebah), seen here on the right, and an elevated offering table on the left. The standing stone was likely an aniconic representation of the temple’s chief deity, and the offering table would have served as a place for priests to lay out offerings or perform rituals such as pouring libations and burning incense. The floor of the room was scattered with a wide variety of cultic artifacts including vessels of various types, mortars and pestles, and incense burners.
