MEMORIES OF A MIRACLE. The Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha, on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, commemorates the gospel narrative about Jesus miraculously feeding crowds by multiplying five loaves and two fish (Mark 6:30–46). Not specifically named in the Gospels, Tabgha was identified with the biblical site only in the fourth century. The modern structure preserves the mosaic floors of the early church, and glass panels offer a view of its original foundations. The elaborate scenes in the church’s left aisle feature water birds and vegetation (right). Beneath the church’s modern altar is a rock where tradition says Jesus placed the fish and loaves for blessing.
