ROCK-SOLID RITUAL. Many stone vessels like the Mt. Zion mug, dating roughly to the first century CE, have been discovered in Jerusalem and its environs. Although the size and form of these vessels can vary (some have handles; others have spouts and handles), they are typically made of chalky limestone with an outer facing of pared facets. During the Herodian period, such stone vessels were likely used for hand-washing or other purity-related ritual practices.
