FAMOUS FEAST. This most famous depiction of the Last Supper, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1490s, is housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The painting, however, was not intended to capture the historical reality of the event. Rather, as was the norm among Renaissance artists, Da Vinci primarily aimed to depict the theological and symbolic elements of the biblical story. By contrast, modern archaeological discoveries from first-century Judea have provided a much clearer and more realistic picture of how Jesus and his disciples would have dined on the eve of the crucifixion.
