Lionel Casson

Lionel Casson (d. 2009) was a Professor of Classics at New York University from 1961-1979. His special interest and expertise was in ancient maritime history.  He is well known for his book Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World (Princeton University Press, 1971; revised 1995), an historical reference work drawing upon the discoveries of modern marine archaeology.  He is also the author of Everyday Life in Ancient Rome (Johns Hopkins University Press, rev. 1999), Everyday Life in Ancient Egypt (Johns Hopkins University Press, rev. 2001) and Libraries in the Ancient World (Yale University Press, 2001).
