The Biblical Archaeology Society is offering two prizes of $2,500 each for travel expenses to present an academic paper at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) or the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), both to be held in San Diego in November. One prize will be awarded to a young scholar and another to an emeritus scholar. Both categories often fail to find institutional support.
The Hershel Shanks Prizes are supported as a legacy of the late Sami Rohr from his children. The decision to name the prizes after the BAR editor was made at the insistence of Mr. Rohr, a leading Florida philanthropist. Mr. Rohr’s three children likewise insisted on naming the prize after the BAR editor because “that is what our father wanted.”
