The Biblical Archaeology Society announces the Hershel Shanks Prizes for the best academic papers delivered at the ASOR annual meeting. They will be given in five categories:
1. Archaeology Related to the Hebrew Bible
2. Archaeology Related to the New Testament
3. Archaeology Related to Patristic Literature and Early Christianity
4. Archaeology Related to the Talmud and Late Antique Judaism
5. Archaeology in Israel.
Each prize will carry an honorarium of $1,000. ASOR (the American Schools of Oriental Research) is the premier organization of professional scholars of archaeology in the Near East and the Mediterranean. Its annual meeting is held in mid-November in a different U.S. city each year.
To qualify for an award, anyone wishing to nominate a paper (the presenter or anyone else) must send a copy to the Biblical Archaeology Society by January 31 following its presentation at the ASOR annual meeting. Please include a designation of the category into which the paper is being entered (see list of categories above). Winners will be announced in BAR.
