With the completion of its latest photographic task, the Ancient Biblical Manuscript Center in Claremont, California, now has the world’s largest collection of Dead Sea Scroll photographs stored in one place. In January 1992, the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem invited the center’s photographic team, Bruce and Ken Zuckerman and Stephen A. Reed, to do some work at this major Dead Sea Scroll archive. During their visit, the team made 4,000 high resolution photos, principally copies of the original Dead Sea Scroll negatives (including some fragile glass plates), most of which had never been copied before. They also took new photographs of several important scrolls and scroll fragments—including the Temple Scroll, the longest of the Dead Sea Scrolls—on behalf of scholars who are working on them. Although no additional photographic work on the scrolls is scheduled at the moment, the Ancient Biblical Manuscript Center looks forward to doing further photographic work on the Dead Sea Scrolls and anticipates that more invitations will be forthcoming.
