In our November/December 2003 issue, we chided the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) for failing to publish an obituary of one of its honorary trustees, antiquities collector Leon Levy, who died on April 6. We wrote, “Apparently, however, it is all right to accept donations from a collector like Levy while he is alive and even to make him an honorary trustee, but once he dies there is no reason to embarrass oneself by noting his death” (Strata, “The Ultimate Snub,” p. 21).
We are happy to report that in the Fall issue of the ASOR Newsletter, ASOR President Larry Geraty announced that an obituary of Levy would be published in the next ASOR Newsletter.
ASOR has also announced that its appointment of a new executive director, Ingrid Wood (reported in the September/October 2003 issue, p. 21), “turned out to be controversial” and that Ms. Wood had withdrawn. The organization is the process of searching for a new executive director.
