His interest in the archaeology of Israel developed in the 1970s, when he was teaching at Ben-Gurion University. His book,Under the Temple Mount (London: Palestine Exploration Fund), written with Shimon Gibson, was based on previously unpublished material on the underground remains of the Temple Mount.
