1974 Hershel Shanks founds the Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS).
1975 First issue of BAR is published in 7-by-10-inch brown-and-cream format; BAS publishes first book.
1976 BAR includes first color photo.
1977 BAR offers first travel/study tour to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.
1978 BAR format is enlarged to standard magazine size.
1983 BAS buys first computer.
1984 BAS awards first Publication Awards; BAS moves business operation out of Publisher Susan Laden’s basement and editorial office out of Suzanne F. Singer’s basement to an office building across from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
1985 BAS launches second magazine, Bible Review.
1987 BAS launches annual Bible and Archaeology Fest.
1992 BAR is redesigned.
1994 BAS headquarters moves to current address in Washington, D.C.; Publisher Susan Laden leaves the society.
1998 BAS goes online with first website at www.biblicalarchaeology.org; BAS launches third magazine, Archaeology Odyssey.
2003 BAR is redesigned—again.
2004 Susan Laden returns to BAS as Publisher; BAS creates online archive of all published magazines, known today as the BAS Library.
2005 BAS closes down Bible Review.
2006 BAR introduces new format and current design; BAS closes down Archaeology Odyssey.
2009 BAS pages go live on Facebook and Twitter.
2011 BAS launches a new, revamped website, the Bible History Daily blog, and the BAR app.
2016 BAS Library is updated and relaunched.
2017 Hershel Shanks retires as Editor of BAR.
2018 Robert Cargill becomes the new Editor of BAR; Hershel Shanks is promoted to Editor Emeritus.
