BAR takes a look back at some important events in history that happened during the months of November and December.

November 8, 392 A.D. Emperor Theodosius decrees all pagan worship must stop under “pain of death,” making Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire.

November 13, 354 A.D. Augustine of Hippo is born in the North African city of Thagaste (present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria). He later became bishop of Hippo, and his writings are considered foundational texts of Christian theology.

November 27, 1933 Archaeologist William Dever is born in Louisville, Kentucky.

December 14, 1933 Andre Parrot begins his 40-year excavation of ancient Mari in Syria.

25 Kislev–2 Tenet (December 15–22, 2006) Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, the festival of lights commemorating the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian king Antiochus in 165 B.C., the rededication of the Temple and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days.

December 18, 218 B.C. Hannibal and his Carthaginian army violently defeat the Roman army at the Battle of Trebia.
