“Everyone in Lytton will know about it,” Kevin Schmitt commented when told that he had won BR’s “Win-a-Free-Trip-to-the-Holy Land” Contest. That does not mean the soft-spoken, 27-year-old is going to brag, but the news is bound to get around in his Iowa hometown, which has a population equal to the number of days in the year—365. After all, how often does someone win round-trip airfare from New York to Israel plus $500?
The contest, which began in our Summer 1986 issue and continued in three succeeding issues, presented picture-identification quizzes on plants, animals, paintings and mountains connected with the Bible. Correct entries for any one or more of the individual quizzes went into a pool from which the winner was randomly drawn, so a person who answered all four quizzes correctly would have four chances to win. The odds were better than a lottery, but still not easy, as 216 entries vied for the prize.
Mr. Schmitt studied religion at Mt. Marty College (Yankton, South Dakota) and also attended Briarcliff College (Sioux City, Iowa). His intention was to become a priest, but now he is unsure whether he wants to pursue this goal, even though he is only two semesters short of his degree. He currently works for Schettler Studios, Ltd., a company that designs and decorates church interiors.
Our fourth quiz, on mountains, gave Mr. Schmitt the opportunity to submit his winning entry. He knew two of the answers immediately, figured out Mt. Zion by studying the buildings in the picture and had to give a lot of thought to arrive at his Mt. Sinai answer.
Although Mr. Schmitt visited Israel in 1982, he is looking forward to the trip because “there is so much to see.” In addition to spending more time in Jerusalem, he expects to concentrate on southern Israel and hopes to get to Egypt as well.
