The distinguished Israeli archaeologist Gabriel (“Gaby”) Barkay passed away on January 11, at the age of 81. Born in Budapest in 1944, he survived the Holocaust as an infant and later immigrated to Israel. He devoted his life to uncovering the layers of history beneath the Holy Land, with particular interests in burial customs, art, and epigraphy.
