On January 7, 2022, Martha Joukowsky died at the age of 85 at her home in Providence, Rhode Island, near the Brown University campus where she taught from 1982 to 2002. In addition to being a professor of archaeology and anthropology, she and her late husband, Artemis Joukowsky, were instrumental in the funding and creation of Brown University’s Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World.
