Tel Aviv University has announced a new opportunity for graduate study in Israel. The program, “Ancient Israel: Archaeology and History of the Biblical Period,” will offer academic credit transferable to most American universities.
According to Shlomo Bunimovitz, chair of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations, the program is geared toward “students from various fields related to the Hebrew Bible who wish to broaden their knowledge in Biblical and Modern Hebrew, Biblical Archaeology and the history of the Land of Israel during the Biblical period (Iron Age to Persian period).”
Starting in February 2008, participants will attend the spring semester at Tel Aviv University, taking courses that include seminars taught by renowned archaeologists about text and archaeology, the Babylonian and Persian periods in Judah, and Bronze Age Israel. Students also have the option to extend the program by joining an excavation for credit over the following summer. The goal of the new program is to introduce students to issues of archaeological theory and methodology, while at the same time affording an opportunity to participate in fieldwork.
In addition to the regular coursework, another credit-bearing course will be built around four field tours to study the archaeological remains at significant Biblical sites.
The program will be taught entirely in English but includes an intensive Hebrew language course for a month before the spring semester begins. Students may also continue their Hebrew study throughout the semester.
