This octagonal bronze hearth was found at the Monastery of the Virgins, near the southern wall of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount. Other metal objects found in that excavation were an iron umbo (the center part of a shield), an iron ladle and various bronze chains and coins. The hearth has two sets of rings on each side so it could be suspended. For more on the important dig that yielded this artifact, see Eilat Mazar’s article in this issue.
