Endnote 1 – A Case Worse Than the Dead Sea Scrolls: Leading Scholar Denied Access to Elephantine Ostraca

The three remaining unpublished papyri, discovered in recent years by the German archaeological expedition on the island, are being prepared for publication by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Röllig of the University of Tübingen. Although Röllig has publication rights, he, Prof. Werner Kaiser, the German director of excavations at Elephantine, and Prof. M.A.H. Nur el-Din, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, have allowed Bezalel Porten and his colleague Dr. Ada Yardeni to examine and copy these texts with the understanding that they would not publish their results before Röllig.
