Genesis 21:1. The other well-known possible exception is the occurrence of the divine name in Genesis 17:1, and I do not think that even this case is an exception. In Exodus 6:3 the deity tells Moses that His name is Yahweh but that He made Himself known to the patriarchs only as El Shadday, Genesis 17:1 makes a special point of conveying this by saying: “And Yahweh appeared to Abraham and said to him, ‘I am El Shadday’.” This strikes me as the rule not the exception.
