Barkay first raised the issue as long ago as the Seventh Archaeological Conference in Israel, in 1980. Ten years later he wrote a detailed article in Hebrew in Eretz-Israel 21 (Ruth Amiran volume) (1990), pp. 94–106, which prompted a fierce debate in the Hebrew periodical Qadmoniot 24 (1991), pp. 127–128, 25 (1992), p. 58 (see also next footnote); then followed an English version in Israel Exploration Journal 46 (1996), pp. 23–43, and now the same material for the fourth time, in BAR.
