The Christian pilgrim Eucherius, writing in about 440 C.E., informs us that “the walls (of the Temple) were destroyed (by the Romans) to their foundations” (Eucherius, Letter to Faustus [De Situ] 7, trans. John Wilkinson, Jerusalem Pilgrims Before the Crusades [Warminster: Aris and Phillips, 1977], p. 53).
