Footnote 1 – Four Visions of Amos*
In this translation, words in brackets are not found in the Greek translation (the Septuagint). In late Judaism the Hebrew word for Lord (’adonáy) was added either before or after Yahweh in order to remind the reader not to pronounce the ineffable name of God. For this reason, it is found in the Hebrew version (the Masoretic text), but not in the Greek. The last line of 7:1 is in brackets because it is probably a later addition. The Greek text of the last line of 7:1 is quite different: “One locust was king Gog.” This resulted from a misreading of a few letters, suggesting that the Hebrew text with which the translators were working was in poor condition and hence difficult to read.
