This is clear from the story of Jacob’s ladder in Genesis 28:10–22, in which Jacob, having discovered in a dream that the spot where he slept possessed a staircase connecting heaven and earth, erected the stone he had used as a pillow as a massebah (28:18) and declared the place to be “Bethel, the House of God” (28:22).
