Footnote 3 – Genizah Collection at Cambridge University Preserves 2000 Years of History

A genizah is a storage place, usually attached to a synagogue, where books and ritual objects bearing the name of God are stored when they become unusable. According to Jewish law such articles may never he destroyed and should be buried in consecrated ground. Thus, the genizahs of ancient synagogues sometimes contained large collections of manuscripts.
