In the fourth century A.D., two basilicas and a baptistry (shown here) were built at Butrint. The baptistry’s circular main hall, constructed over an earlier Roman-period structure, was supported by massive granite columns arrayed in concentric circles. One of the baptistry’s elaborate mosaic pavements depicts the Tree of Life.
