This photo looks down on the river Merse’s fertile flood plain, where Etruscan farmers probably grew such crops as grapes, millet and barley. Toward the end of the third century B.C. the settlement was attacked and burned, perhaps by Gauls from northwestern Europe (compare with photos of black pottery and acorn missiles).
