The fourth-century church of St. Nicholas, rebuilt by the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX in the 11th century, is located in nearby Demre. The church once contained the remains of St. Nicholas, but Italian merchants reportedly raided his tomb and carried off his bones to Italy.
