In the Tale of Sinuhe, the eponymous hero flees from Egypt to Canaan during the period of uncertainty after the death of Pharaoh Amenemhet I (1991–1962 B.C.), shown here in a relief from Amenemhet’s mortuary temple at Lisht, about 50 miles south of Cairo.
