These painted stone columns, in the east wing of the Cretan Palace of Knossos, were installed during a controversial restoration by Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20th century (the original columns were made of wood). Unlike Henry Miller, many scholars found Evans’s work anachronistic and absurd.
