This small Bronze Age juglet from Cyprus was used to store and transport opium (compare with photo of Base-ring Ware). The earliest physical evidence of the cultivation of opium poppies comes from Neolithic west-central Europe; opium use probably spread from Europe eastwards, reaching the Near East in the 16th century B.C.
