One of the earliest representations of the poppy capsule is a 5-inch-high capital (drawing shown here, compare with photo of poppy capsule) found by Arthur Evans in the palace at Knossos, Crete. Dating to Late Minoan I (1600–1450 B.C.), the capital once rested atop a column, mimicking the natural arrangement of the poppy capsule on its stem.
