The Giza workers’ cemetery, in the shadow of the pyramids, contains more than 700 graves. The cemetery remained in use through the Fourth and Fifth Dynasties (2575–2323 B.C.). The lower cemetery, shown here, was found when a tourist’s horse stumbled over an ancient wall; the excavation team later found an upper cemetery (not visible), which contained the tomb of Inty-shedu, whose statues are shown at the beginning of this article.
