Kourion’s wooded groves made it the appropriate place for the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates (shown here, compare with photo of baptistery mosaic floor), a deity for whom trees are sacred. Built in the eighth century B.C., the temple remained in use until the fourth century A.D., when Kourion was destroyed by an earthquake.
