In the early fifth century A.D., a Christian basilica was built over Kourion’s ruins. The basilica contained an elaborate baptistery with a mosaic floor decorated with fish and birds (shown here, compare with photo of Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates). The fish symbolize Christ, and birds were often used in early Christian art to symbolize the soul.
